Sitara Achievements
Helping IDPs:
In the year 2005 the IDPs problem was started due to the initiation of SALWA JUDUM by the oppistion congress party leader Mr.Mahendra Karma. It was started in Ambeli and Karkeli Villages of Bijapur District, forms part of Kutru Police station-Chattisgarh State.
Its literal meaning is Peace March, later it was turned as anti Maoist movement and people of the region divided as Pro and Anti Salwa Judum. It was backed by the Government and given arms and training to face the Naxals in the name of Peace March.
This resulted into internal conflict among the Tribals and people who oppose the Naxals were kept in Camps by the Government and rest of the people reside in forest subjected to attacks by the police in the name of Naxal Sympathizers and the same people was attacked by the Naxlas branding them as informers to police. In this critical situation people found difficult to live safely and choosed adjacent Andhra Pradesh forests areas as a safe place for protecting their lives.
Till now a total number of 6200 people have been migrated to AP due to internal conflict. Prior to these people nearly 12000 people migrated to AP from Chattisgarh due to various reasons like availability of Fertile land, Availability of Chilli, Bamboo, Tobacco Crops
Many of them in the beginning of the migration, 2006, started their lifes in and around Trees, they were worstly suffered due to lack of medication, nutrition and timely food.
SITARA intervened at this critical juncture, provided them medical relief, nutrition food and established Schools for their children. Represented their cause to National Human Rights Commission, National Child Rights Commission, National Scheduled Tribal Commission and facilitated to start alternative schools in 203 habitations by the Government. MSF, Action Aid, and some willing individuals supported the initiative.
Apart from the above work SITARA in association with ITDA Bhadrachalam and with all line departments, conducted a survey on population of IDPs in Khammam District and prepared a data base on 25-09-2009.
